VIRTUAL BRAIN: Blue Brain project

Hello Everyone, today we will be getting a glimpse of “BLUE BRAIN”, hold on don’t worry about reading those unfamiliar tough technical words, let’s make it simple.

All of us are familiar with the work of an sketch artist right?. Many of us might have our own sketches from different artists, these sketches are stimulation of our physical appearances. Exactly that, Blue Brain is, a simulation of human brain in all the areas including, thinking, responding, taking decision, storing memory and in all other functioning. Blue Brain Project is a Swiss research project. It is the first virtual brain project.

” Sketch of a baby picture and Blue Brain”

Now Think, Why do we need sketches and pictures? Yes, to capture the moments so that those memory never fade away. In case, of blue brain we require this technology so that:

  • Things could be remembered without any efforts.
  • Imagine if we could use Einstein’s Brain and can resolve more puzzling theories in the universe, this can be possible with the help of blue brain, we can actually use a person’s intelligence even after his/her death.
  • Reveal many existing aspects of the brain circuit, knowing about what are the other possibilities of a brain functioning.
  • A dialogue in 3 Idiots movie “Engineers are very clever they have designed machines which can measure the pressure of blood and can diagnose other diseases but no machine can measure the pressure of the brain”, kudos!! here’s the first step towards measuring the pressure on brain, blue brain will also help in analysis about the different workings of brain like memory loss, memory capability.
3 IDIOTS
  • With the evolving culture the diseases related to brain are increasing more than any other disease, blue brain will help us scanning our brain, monitor the function and know the disease.

This all sounds so fascinating but a question arises“HOW TO UPLOAD OUR BRAIN TO A VIRTUAL BRAIN?”

Going back to the sketching artists example, have you ever noticed that how he actually sketch you into a picture, obviously by observations through his eyes, noticing all the small details about your appearance. His eyes works as a medium of connection between you and his sketch.

NANOBOTS:

The medium between your brain and virtual brain, basically the eyes of virtual brain.

NANOBOTS

To achieve the target of uploading your brain to virtual brain nanobots plays an important role. Due to their nano size(small size) they can travel throughout our circulatory system, these can be embedded into human brains and they are functioned to analyse the activities of neuro-system within the brain and all the networks build by dendrites and axon. Further transfer this information to the virtual brain.

WHERE WILL THIS UPLOADED DATA BE STORED?

Since our brain consists of vast memory, it requires:

  • A Super computer, a computer much more advanced than today’s computers.
  • Memory with a very large storing capacity.
  • Processor with a very high processing power.
  • A program to convert the electric impulses from the brain to input signal which is to be received by the computer and vice versa.
  • The Blue Brain has some 8,000 processor which amps one or two simulated brain neurons to each processor making the computer a replica of 10,000 neurons.

THINK!!

  • What if the stored intelligence of a person with great human brain be used in a wrong way?
  • What if these technologies are weaponized against us?
  • What if we become too much dependent on computers that we lose the natural capabilities of our brain?

Does any fluid attracted to magnet?

Hey guys, childhood is really fun. From being curious to asking questions without any hesitation. So, going through random thoughts, this one question stuck to my mind. Apart from the most commonly known iron, cobalt and nickel what else is attracted towards magnet? And then i got to know about this fluid. Further i was curious to know about properties, application of this fluid. So, without any further puzzling out. Let’s jump to the point.

FERROFLUID

The first thing that pop into my mind after seeing the above picture was “Is this a fluid?”, more or less it pretty much resembles a crystalline structure as that of solids. So, what exactly it is? Well, this is what it actually is, a liquid metal also popular as “Ferrofluid”.

The fluid consists out of iron nanoparticles (ferro) and a solvent (mostly oil or water). To prevent separation of the iron particles and the solvent, a surfactant is used. This surfactant has a head-tale construction and works like a detergent. The polar part (head or tale) is attracted to an iron particle and the non-polar part is attracted to the carrier fluid. This makes the ferrofluid an homogeneous liquid. The interesting fact is that we can prepare it at home: https://nationalmaglab.org/education/magnet-academy/try-at-home/making-ferrofluids#:~:text=Pour%20a%20bit%20of%20vegetable,the%20ferrofluid%20to%20become%20thicker.

Structure of Ferrofluid

Now, think when you drop some oil on floor you can’t get it back it will split all around the floor in random patter but that’s not the case with ferrofluid if you accidentally drop it on floor then just bring a strong magnet near it you can get it on magnet back or you can set the direction for the flow of it by placing magnets in particular manner. So, A major benefit of ferrofluid is that the liquid can be forced to flow via the positioning and strength of the magnetic field and so the ferrofluid can be positioned very exactly. Ferrofluids also have the capability of reducing friction, making them useful in a variety of electronic and transportation applications. Further it is used to create stunning sculptures, can be used to seal many electronic devices and have medical applications too. In future it is expected that this fluid can also be used to create artificial heart, to know how click on the link:

A ferrofluid sculpture

Isn’t it amazing the a fluid can be so useful and fun at the same time, just because of it’s property of getting attracted towards magnet. Now think what will happen if our cooking oil also starts exhibiting same properties or if all fluids obtain this property. What problems we will be facing or will their be no problem at all?

THINK!!!

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

Hey, guys let us join the trending world of Artificial Intelligence. A lot of questions pop up as we say AI. So, Here you will be getting familiar with the terms of AI. What is AI? Types of AI? Goals of AI? Pros and Cons of AI? Scope of AI? Latest news related to AI?

Connecting human brains and technology

What is AI?

Have you ever been to a mimicry show? There you see a person trying to imitate the other person up to the maximum extent he/she can. Like: the way they talk, walk and their gesture. That is what AI is, a mimic trying to imitate human intelligence. In technical terms AI is the simulation of human intelligence in machines which are programmed to think and act like humans in certain situations. They exhibit traits associated with human minds such as learning and problem solving.

Types of AI?

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Type-1

1.Narrow AI: Also known as “Weak AI” as they can’t think for themselves. They are incapable of performing a task on their own. And are designed only for particular tasks. Example: Alexa, Siri. you ask them question and they enter that into search engine and display answers accordingly but they can’t perform tasks without our command. So, they are command dependent. For more info- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weak_AI.

2.General AI: Also known as “Strong” AI, they can carry a task on their own. Comparatively more complex and complicated then Narrow AI. They are more like humans, as these can perform any intellectual task that a human can. Ability to solve problems, make decisions from prior knowledge and can be creative steps them closed towards more advanced technology. Example: Self Driven cars and hospital operating rooms. For more info- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_algorithm.

3.Strong AI: “Artificial super intelligence” it is believed that strong AI can exceed human intelligent in various scenarios. It will be overruling us one day. Which might be a great threat to our society. We will be lacking from them in various aspects like problem solving, decision making and in skills that we hardly discover we have. University of Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom defines superintelligence as “any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superintelligence.

Type-2

1.Reactive Machine: It is the most basic form of AI. Programmed in a way to provide us with the best output possible. In this form the machine chooses the best outcome based on the present possibility. Neither they can use past experiences nor they can create memory. Best example for this is the Deep Blue, IBM’s chess-playing supercomputer. Deep Blue calculates the best move possible at the present situation, it can’t take decision by using memory or past experience.

2.Limited Memory: These machines generates an output through observing and monitoring activities of the object to be taken in concern. They are preprogrammed in such a way that these observations are then stored to their memory which further help them in making decisions. But this memory is transient. Example: traffic light making self judgement about turning red signal to green automatically if their is more traffic on one side of road as no traffic on the other side.

3.Theory Of Mind: “Theory of mind” is itself so interesting, according to it every individual have their own perspective of life , their desires and beliefs. So, focusing on this theory, experiments are done. Machines will be build in future using this theory. They will be programmed in such a way that they can actually get the idea of entities in the world. For accepting these machines in our society it’s necessary that, they should be familiar with the fact that each one of us have different thinking, believes, feelings and expectations. These machines will be more user friendly, and will be closer in approaching human neural with machines.

4.Self Awareness: As the word itself suggests the meaning and intention behind this creation of science. “Conscious knowledge about one’s own feelings and character” , the idea behind this machine is just an extended form of theory of mind. Science is planning to build machines which are conscious about their individuality. Programmed in such a way that they can be angry, happy and have various feelings. But at present it seems hypothetical. We are far from achieving that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outline_of_artificial_intelligence.

What are the Goals Of AI?

  • The measure goal of AI, as we can predict is to, equip machines with human intelligence. In other words it is a collaboration of human intelligence and machines.
  • To build machines which can be a part of human society.
  • To build much complex machines, that can perform various tasks on their own.
  • To build systems which can advice their users.

What Are Pros And Cons Of AI?

A machine can be your friend and foe

Pros:

  • These can provide us more accurate information about particular area of search.
  • Solving complex problems will be easy and precise.
  • Rate of working will increase in factories and in many other fields, if we replace humans with AI machines.
  • Various life threatening situations where humans presently work in, can be accomplished by these without actual loss of any life. Works like mining .
  • They can detect fraud in card based systems like ATM’s. Can help in cyber crime.
  • They can be used for discussions as they can provide more effective way to resolve the problem. Without being emotionally inclined.
  • Can be posted in army as well (when coded properly with precautions).
  • They can be used for researches as they can predict effective outcomes far beyond a human can imagine.

Cons:

  • These require a lot of investment of time and money.
  • Advancing them to extreme level might result in giving the power in their hands, which could be weaponized against us.
  • Lack of emotions might result in some of the harmful decision, like allowing them in hospital may result in panicking the patient as they will think of logic rather then the feelings of the patient at that time.
  • Replacing people in factory with them might result in unemployment which will eventually lead to poverty.
  • If someone coded them with wrong intention they can lead to disaster.
  • Don’t let machine be your master because if so, we might lose our capabilities to think beyond as we’ll be dependent on them.

Scope of AI?

Richard Barnett is currently “chief marketing officer at supplyframe” and “former super vice president of LevaData Inc” one’s quoted in an interview that “those who don’t adopt AI are at risk of losing their jobs, or not able to progress forward” this statement itself predicts the scope of AI in future. In simple words AI is going to be a major part of our life which will eventually lead to the necessity of learning this technology. AI will be reserving a large sector of employment as it is a vast field to discover. It is good if we start preparing our self today for the upcoming technology.
